Do you feel that life has become overly protective ? Everybody telling us what we ought to be doing and how we should behave – ‘Warning, this coffee might be hot’ or ‘Warning these peanuts contain nuts’, that sort of craziness. The worst part is that, in reality, these messages are not aimed at helping us. No, they are designed to protect the backs of the company.

Estate agency, I’m afraid to tell you, can be exactly the same. My favourite this week, “To make sure people know your house is for sale you must have a for sale board outside”.

Now then its no surprise when I tell you that Estate Agents tend to think mainly of themselves, erm most of the time actually and, quite often whats in it for them has little connection with what their customer wants so whilst a For Sale board may attract the odd person its main purpose is to advertise the estate agent…. for free…for months !

Quite often home owners really don’t want a board, Why would they BUT estate agents are rarely polite enough to ask for permission to put one up. It ‘appears’ over night.

I going to make a number statements in these blogs which 99% of the estate agent community will class as commercial suicide, but hear me out, here comes my first. Ban For Sale boards ! They are totally irrelevant in today’s online market where ultimately your needs are served by advertising your home online where typically 95% of home buyers look. Also, the first thing that will happen when your board goes up is a flurry of excited estate agents will knock on your door, but hey. More about that in the next blog
